McCarthy, Alaska: Treasure and Tragedy with Nancy Simmerman In 1900, one of the world’s richest copper deposits was discovered, high above massive glaciers in Alaska’s Wrangell Mountains. The Kennecott Copper Corporation was formed to extract, process and ship the ore. The town of McCarthy, 5 miles down the road, welcomed families as well as homesick and weary bachelor miners seeking “evening entertainment.” The mines closed in 1938. McCarthy became a ghost town but began to rebound in the late 1960s. Nancy first visited McCarthy about 1970 and had a small second home there from 1980 to 1990. In that time it went from a tiny sleepy off-grid community of about 25 to become the major attraction in the newly established Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, still off-grid, attracting thousands of visitors (87,158 in 2012) as well as students, artists, and hikers. The residents experienced horrible tragedy, then renewal to a cohesive community from an assemblage of “loners” -- only to be blindsided by the arrival of ‘messianic’ PaPa Pilgrim, his wife and 14 children. (Recommended book: Pilgrim’s Wilderness: A True Story of Faith and Madness on the Alaska Frontier, by Tom Kizzia. Print or audio, available through our library.) A professional photographer covering the entire state of Alaska from 1959 to 1989, Nancy will share “her McCarthy” via an old-fashioned slide show. You’ll get a bit of history and what it’s like to live in McCarthy (permanent population: only 28 in 2010.) Sponsored by Friends of the Island Library. Refreshments after the program. This program is free and welcome to all. Donations to help maintain the library cheerfully accepted.
